Sa Kabanata 17 ng El Filibusterismo, na pinamagatang "Pag-uusig", ipinapakita ang mga pag-uusig ng mga Espanyol sa mga Pilipinong nagnanais ng kalayaan at pagbabago.
El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed) is the second novel written by Philippine national hero Dr. José Rizal. Published in 1891, it is a political and social commentary on the Spanish colonial regime. The novel follows Crisóstomo Ibarra, who returns under the disguise of the wealthy jeweler, Simoun, to foment a revolution.
In the 1890s, direct criticism of the friars was illegal. The fair setting allowed Rizal to bypass censors: any accusation could be dismissed as “stage fiction.” Yet readers understood. The head’s final prophecy—”You will know the truth, and the truth will make you poor, free, and hated”—was printed verbatim. Not long after, the novel was banned across the archipelago.
Simoun's absence is significant. He is the architect of the revolution, yet he is missing from the fair. This symbolizes how the true revolutionaries are often invisible, working in the shadows while the rest of society enjoys shallow entertainment. Ben-Zayb's speculation that Simoun might fear exposure hints that the revolutionary plot is fragile and subject to discovery by the authorities. Isang maganda at maaliwalas na gabi sa Quiapo
By the saints! If it isn't Doña Victorina, and there, walking like the moon itself, is her niece, Paulita Gomez!
The novel follows the story of Juan Crisostomo Basilio, also known as Simoun, a jeweler who returns to the Philippines with the intention of avenging the injustices of the past and reforming the corrupt system. Through his journey, Rizal critiques the colonial policies of Spain, the abuse of power by the friars, and the lack of integrity among government officials.
Unlike the calculating Padre Salvi, Camorra is brutish and literal. His question about the rooster reduces mysticism to farce. Rizal uses him to show that friars are not evil geniuses but petty, corruptible men. Their authority collapses when laughter replaces awe.

Share public link
